Lesson 3: Choose your platform to sell (Include free worksheet + Tutorial)
Here’s come with the decision, choose a right commerce platform will help you grow your business. Finding your best platform might take some time to figure out, but try out one at least stick with them for half a year before you decide to move to another one.
Here’s couple reason you need to consider before you choose one:
1.Are you a tech person?
To be honest, when I just start up, I have no idea of any kind of CSS, HTML, do I lost you there? Haha, exactly what I feel when people start to tell me all this thing, just get me so confuse. Thank god for all those smart people, make all these things so much easier to use.
If you don’t know any coding. I recommend you start with Et say or Shopify
2. Is the site can present your brand?
Can the platform make your brand stand out? Can you change the theme to make it fit your style? This is important, because you want your customer land it on a site is doesn’t look like your brand, and them they will left because they might think they went to a wrong site, them you miss it.
3. Pricing
Is the monthly pricing can I afford it? When you just start out, each single penny seems like a lot to you, that why make sure can I afford those monthly plans? Etsy price is by listing, depend on how many item you sell there, Shopify is $29+ dollars a month, you have unlimited item, same is woocommerce.
So if you only have couple product, easy might work better for you, in the beginning, if you have hundred of them, Shopify or woo commerce would be more suitable, since you will save up listing fee anyway.
4. Is the website make you feel SAFE to shop?
This is really IMPORTANT, if I search something on google, and they take me to a site look not modern, don’t updated it often, does not include clear guideline of shipping, refund all those kind of thing, I will back out really quick, because I don’t want to put my credit card information in some radon site I not trust.
5. Traffic source
No matter what platform you choose, you are the one need to bring the traffic to your site to be able to get sell, you can set up SEO bring organic traffic from google or another search engine, or pay AD for bringing people in. But one good thing of Et say is there already have a lot of traffic every day, people ready to shop, because they send out daily pick the item from an editor, and have community people pin up design they like to share with their friends, all this will help you when you start out.
6. Is it mobile friendly
Common, if the site is not mobile friendly is totally out of conversation( Do I sound too mean?) 99% of people have smartphone now, what do you do when you waiting for getting hair cut or bus(just an example) you pull out your phone start check it on email….., and some reason I land on the site and find that design is so cute, it’s also on sell too. Then next thing I know is I got a mail for “thanks for shopping with xxx ” yep! If you site is not mobile friendly. You lose one customer like me right here now.
7. Customer service
We are hoping your site never have the problem, that’s what we always hope for, but plan change all the time, the system might overheat or you have too much traffic all the sudden, and you site is down. Do not panic! Contact you customer service right away, Shopify are great, they always response me less than 24 hours, woocommerce is a free source, so only have support form, you can submit your question ask others, usually take a while to get answer, but most the time your site shot down is because hosting company, so you need to check hosting company first.
8. Speed
You can check on your site speed limit here, use this free tool.
Think about you are ready to buy books on Amazon, and them they take more than 5 minutes to open a site or search the book you want, are you still on that page? WOW! if you still on there, you win the most patient customer of the day! (just kidding!) Most people will leave a site if they don’t load in 30 seconds, maybe 60 seconds on the most. you most think “Are you serious?” Yep! People get really impatient when technology make our life so convent, so we don’t like to wait!
